Road Bay Anguilla

Road Bay is one of our favourite anchorages in the northern Leeward Islands. Like the rest of the island, it’s laid-back and unpretentious (just like Sunsail in fact, perhaps that’s why we like it so much?!), seeming to encapsulate the very best of relaxed Caribbean charm.  Watersports are a big thing here and Anguilla is known as the wreck-dive capital of the Caribbean, with seven deliberately-sunken wrecks that are now home to a huge variety of tropical fish and corals. You can also snorkel, windsurf and jet-ski.

A perfect stretch of dazzling white beach dotted with casual beach bars and restaurants runs along the coast – all sorts of different cuisines from French to Caribbean to Creole are on offer. Johnno’s Bar usually has good live music at the weekends and if you fancy putting your glad rags on, it might be worth booking a table at the Malliouhana Restaurant at nearby Meads Bay and getting to know the contents of their 25,000 bottle wine cellar.

The interior of Anguilla is well worth exploring and it’s fun to rent a car and head off and explore the island’s numerous small hamlets with all sorts of eclectic shops and restaurants away from the main action on the coast. You can take a tour of the Old Salt Factory and there is one surviving plantation house that shows what life was like on Anguilla in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. An abundance of birdlife and interesting flora and fauna completes the picture of a Caribbean island that’s nigh on perfect and a great place to explore.
