Amorgos was the location for Luc Besson’s film The Big Blue which accounts for the hordes of French people who descend on the island in high summer to pay homage to the auteur. The wreck of the Olympia which featured in the movie is located at Liveros at the west end of the island.

Amorgos offers dramatic mountain scenery and a laid-back atmosphere and attracts visitors who enjoy the excellent walking trails and relatively uncommercialised and hospitable ambience.  The island’s two main anchorages are Katapola in the southwest and Eyiali in the north. Katapola is located at the head of a deep inlet and is a lovely little town with a good few tavernas located on the waterfront square. About half an hour’s walk outside of town – NB uphill! - are the remains of ancient Minoa.

The site is under excavation and you will be able to see the foundations of an Apollo temple and a crumbled Roman structure, plus lots of broken pottery. The site offers outstanding views out over the bay, and of Hora and Arkessini.  The best beach close to Katapola is at Kato Krotiri to the west of the town. At Hora, the still-occupied monastery of Hozoviotissas is built into the cliffs and is a must-see for anyone on an Amorgos yacht charter.

Kalotaritssas Bay on the far western tip of the island is stunningly beautiful. Eyiali Bay is smaller and more picturesque than Katapola – it can get busy in high season. There is a lovely loop-walk northeast from Eyiali that climbs up below the cliff-hung tiny cave-church of Ayia Triadha to the village of Langadha and continues on to Tholaria, named after the vaulted Roman tombs found nearby, before heading back down to Eyiali. Behind the island of Nikouria there is a natural shallow bay with clear turquoise water, a lovely beach with a few great tavernas and good wind-surfing. Bliss.
