Cap Sounion Bay Yacht Charters

One of the most memorable sights on your Greek sailing holiday, one that will remain with you long after you return home, is that of the breathtaking Temple of Poseidon perched atop the craggy cliffs at Cape Sounion Bay, its fifteen remaining white marble columns catching the light of the sun.

The bay sits at the mouth of the Saronic Gulf and on the southwest coast of the Attica Peninsula. Poseidon was the god of the sea and the ruins of the temple that can be seen today date from 440 BC, replacing an earlier temple on the same site also in honour of Poseidon. The temple has been a landmark for mariners for aeons.

Anchor your charter yacht at in Cape Sounion Bay to the west of the cliffs and take the dinghy ashore.  You can climb the trail up the cliffs and walk through the ruins of the partly restored grand temple, imagining what it must have been like when all thirty marble columns were still intact and the temple was presided over by a massive statue of Poseidon himself.

At sunset, the views out over the other islands in the Cyclades and the majestic Aegean as it turns from its daytime blue to a shimmering mass of reds and oranges are spectacular. Equally stunning are the views up towards the temple from the deck of your boat anchored at the foot of the cliffs.

Nearby is another set of ruins, that of the Temple of Athena, the goddess of wisdom.
