Mykonos

A Mykonos boat charter is an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the most popular and most high profile of the islands in the Cyclades.  There is no denying that Mykonos Town gets crowded in high season – August is particularly busy – but it is still delightful and photogenic with whitewashed houses and hundreds of tiny churches, chapels and shrines.

The nightlife is hectic and Mykonos is, of course, one of the premier gay resorts of the Mediterranean, particularly in September. The locals don’t bat an eyelid, their tolerance enhanced by an appreciation of how important this tourism is to the local economy. The streets of the town are labyrinthine – supposedly designed that way to confuse the pirates who plagued the island in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and now having the same effect on visiting tourists.

The Archaeological, Folklore and Maritime Museums are worth a visit, as is Lena’s House – a restored and furnished middle-class home from the nineteenth century. Little Venice and Alefkandhra are packed with art galleries, trendy shops and more bars and restaurants than you could imagine an island this size could need – somehow in August they all fill up!

The beaches on the south coast of the island tend to be crowded in high season, with many of them pumping out music 24/7 but Pasarou – a pretty stretch of white sand fringed by reeds – is a little quieter and has a great fish restaurant on the waterfront in N’Ammos. On the north coast, Panormos Bay is sheltered from the seasonal meltemi wind and has two lovely sheltered beaches – Panormos and Ayios Sostis – where you can anchor your Mykonos yacht charter for a quiet afternoon of swimming and snorkelling and either repair your hangover or prepare for another one.
