Sifnos is a pretty and appealing island in the northern Cyclades. It is more cultivated and has better architecture than some of its neighbours and aims to cater for an upmarket clientele.

The feel of the island is relaxed and friendly and the balance between having enough facilities to cater for tourists and too many has been well-managed.  Sifnos is very family-friendly and an ideal place to bring children.  The modest size of the island and its good road network make the island easy to explore. There is an efficient bus service, but the island is also criss-crossed with walking trails that hikers will be keen to investigate.

Sifnos has a long tradition of pottery-making and is also known for its beautifully situated churches and monasteries, especially Agios Spyridon and Profitti Ilias. Climb up and bring a picnic – the sense of achievement and the views will make up for the pain along the way and the aching limbs the next day. If you’re lucky you may encounter a panagiri, where the islanders head up the mountain for a religious service and celebrate afterwards with wine, food and dancing.

Kamares is the main port of the island and is an ideal stop-over on your Sifnos yacht charter. Kamares has a fine beach, tucked inside the steep-sided valley that cuts into the cliffs of the island’s western side.  The waterfront here is lined with shops, bars and restaurants – the Old Captain tends to be where the visiting yachties hang out – and it’s perfectly possible to sit in one of the many tavernas with a glass of wine or a nice cold beer while the children play on the beach a few feet away. On Sundays, all of the tavernas serve rivithia – the chick pea stew that is a local speciality.

The beach stretches from Kamares to Agia Marina – the water is clear and shallow. Just beyond the rocks at Agia Marina is some of the best swimming and the Argiris Taverna on the small dock is considered one of the finest on the island.
