Kioni Ithaca

Kioni is a small village and harbour just south of Ormos Frikes in the southeast of Ithaca, 25km from Vathy. You will recognise it from the three windmill towers on the end of Ak Psigadhi, at the southern entrance to the bay. The village is picturesque with an amphitheatre of tiled-roofed white-painted houses built around the deep blue waters of the bay. The steep hillsides behind the village are covered in olive groves and cypress trees.

In the past Kioni was a prosperous place that was home to over one thousand inhabitants. Emigration to Australia and the US is responsible for a decline in population, and the earthquake of 1953 was another contributory factor, with many locals deciding not to move back to the village after the destruction of their homes. A few pre-earthquake houses remain, some of them dating back to the founding of the village in the 16th century.

These days, Kioni during the summer season is a convivial and modern resort with a many good cafes and tavernas catering to sailors on a Kioni Ithaca yacht charter.

  • Mooring is stern or bows-to the quay. Alternatively, you can anchor in the harbour. The depth of the harbour ranges from 10 – 20 metres (33 – 65 feet). A long line to the shore is advised.  The bottom is mud and weed and the holding is not always reliable.
