Save your holiday spending money for a stopover at Positano, the most expensive and most photogenic town on the Amalfi Coast. The steep streets of the town, many of which are no more than staircases, are packed tight with houses painted in the pinks and peaches that make Positano so instantly recognisable. It’s not all glossy shops selling expensive branded designer goods though, occasionally you’ll wander around a corner and find yourself amongst buildings with crumbling stucco and peeling paint that provide a welcome touch of reality. The town is effectively divided in two by a cliff on which stands the Torre Trasita.

To the west are the Spiaggia del Fornillo beach and the less affluent part of town, to the east is the Spaggia Grande behind which lies the town centre. Positano is not a town crammed with sights and attractions that must be ticked off a ‘must see’ list – although the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is worth a visit for the 13th century Byzantine Black Madonna above the main altar and the cute cherubs that peek out from behind the arches. Amongst the tourist restaurants are some gems, but remember to do your research and make sure to book ahead if you want to get a table with a view!

The nightlife is sophisticated and genteel rather than lively, which may be either a good or a bad thing. Music on the Rocks is the uber-chic nightclub carved into the tower at the eastern end of Spiaggia Grande. Naples and Pompeii are within easy reach and if you have never visited either, think about incorporating an excursion into your visit to Positano. Amalfi itself is close by and the pleasure of cruising the famous yachting playground of the Amalfi coast in your own yacht should not be underestimated.

  • There is no marina in Positano.  In settled weather, you can either drop anchor or pay to pick up a buoy in the open anchorage off the town.  The cost to pick up a buoy varies according to the time of year.
  • If you wish to pick up a buoy, contact Blue Star Positano on 0039 089 811888.
