South Molle Island

Just a short hop from Airlie Beach you’ll find yourself back in the heart of the Whitsundays at South Molle Island. This picturesque charter stop boasts stunning white-sandy beaches lit by a backdrop of lush green slopes scattered with pockets of rainforest and fringed by colourful coral reefs. Popular with nature lovers, the island forms part of the Molle Islands National Park and offers many bushwalking tracks and trails leading past a diverse range of plant, bird and wildlife to secluded beaches and impressive lookout points, which offer outstanding panoramic views out over the Great Barrier Reef and Whitsundays archipelago.

Find yourself a secluded bay and head out to the colourful coral reef in search of a superb snorkelling spot. Discover the tropical treasures of this underwater paradise as you swim amongst huge batfish, blue and purple parrotfish, schools of flashing silvery trevally and tiny anglefish as they dart around the staghorn coral. South Molle Island was once used by the Ngaro Aboriginals for making tools and weapons from its stone quarry and the remnants of this ancient past can be found on neighbouring Hook Island in the cave paintings at Nara Inlet.

Just before dusk, take an evening stroll across the sandy spit to Mid Molle Island where amongst the forests of eucalyptus you’ll find sooty oystercatchers, kookaburras and the indigenous giant fruit bats hanging from the canopy. Head back to South Molle and the islands resort bar for a well-earned sundowner before making your way to the restaurant for a delicious, sumptuous meal.
