Sunsail wins PBO Green Award for Service

PBO award webSunsail is delighted to announce that we have won the prestigious Practical Boat Owner Green Award for Service for 2009. The awards aim to recognise marine businesses and individuals who have taken steps to make the leisure boat industry more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

The winners were selected by the editorial staff of PBO who were impressed with the standard of entry into this years competition. "It's been a fantastic first Green Awards for PBO. Congratulations to the winners and everyone who entered the inaugural competition," said PBO editor Sarah Norbury, "Our readers are genuinely passionate about raising environmental awareness and with the PBO green awards we hope to celebrate companies, organisations and individuals taking action to make the sport and the industry more sustainable and eco-friendly.'

Sunsail won the ‘Green Award for Service’ for the brand new charter base in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, which has the environment and customer experience at the heart of its design. Protection of reefs and conservation of fresh water are important concerns in the Caribbean and as the biggest charter company operating in the islands, Sunsail is committed to protecting this environment.

The new facility in Wickhams Cay II marina includes an innovative ‘Closed Loop’ yacht haul out and maintenance facility which contains and filters run-off from yacht cleaning, a new seawater desalination plant producing up to 240,000 litres of freshwater daily, grey-water recycling facilities handling up to 45,000 litres a day, and a new breakwater with built-in flush system which has dramatically improved water circulation and quality in the marina.

Sunsail has also been instrumental in the development of low toxin antifouling now used on the Sunsail fleet worldwide and the installation of minimal-impact mooring systems to help protect the seabed.

Lex Raas, CEO of Sunsail states "We are very proud of what we have achieved so far with our new £10 million base in Tortola, and our award-winning environmentally responsible headquarters in Florida, but there is always more to do. Expect to see more innovative and energy-saving features on Sunsail yachts over the coming months, such as our new Sunsail 384 catamaran which features solar panels".
