Level 2 Sailing Courses - RYA Day Skipper Practical Course

Reviews

Learning to drive a car was never this much fun ...

Overview - Give us a summary of your time with Sunsail?

What a cracking 5 days! Strictly speaking, Day Skipper isn't a holiday, but for two weekends in an uncharacteristically warm April (I had my reservations booking so early in the season), I can happily say I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else but aboard our 37 foot training yacht. The sailing was fantastic, the company was great and we moored up in some fantastic little spots (including Cowes, the Hamble River and Lymington). Our instructor, Peter Flowers, struck the perfect balance between teacher and observer, and managed to stay calm in the face of many an impending disaster (including a grounding on our final day out)! I would certainly recommend Sunsail (and Peter - whose passion for sailing and boats was obvious) to anybody wanting to get their Day Skipper qualification.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

The showers at Sunsail HQ in Port Solent are undoubtedly the best in the Solent :-)

Yachts - What was the best thing about your yacht?

It was clean, well-stocked and seemed to sail just fine. It was a real bonus to have a spinnaker.

Tips - Do you have any advice for fellow Sunsail guests visiting this destination?

Don't book yourself on a Day Skipper course if you can't sail! We had two people on board who had barely set foot in a boat before. They were lovely guys, but they struggled to grasp where the wind was coming from, couldn't tell the difference between gybing and tacking (and they failed as a result!). This would have been fine on a Competent Crew course, but on Day Skipper you want to learn as much about skippering a yacht as you can in the few days available to you. I felt our skipper was having to spend an unnecessary amount of time teaching the basics.

Highlights - What were the most memorable experiences of your holiday and where on your itinerary did they happen?

Undoubtedly running aground in Cowes Harbour. After a long day on the water, we came to a rather unsurreptitious halt less than 10 feet from the pub. Team work (and a bit of encouragement from other boats) eventually got us within leaping distance of the jetty and we made it inside in time for last orders - much to the amusement of other drinkers.

Louise Smith,

Excellent instructor and boat in a great location. A solid grounding for taking a boat out as skipper.

We did the course out of Port Solent. Nearly everything was provided, we purchased some waterproof boots from the nearby chandlers for complete defence against the English weather. We had good and challenging conditions, which helped us learn how to sail in a force 7/8, very useful.
